Living medinas: how to explore with confidence

Practical advice for navigating Morocco's historic old towns, from getting lost on purpose to shopping with respect.

Medinas are neighbourhoods, not museums

The old towns of Fes, Marrakech, Tetouan and Essaouira are homes, schools, workshops and mosques as well as tourist sites. Remember that you are walking through people's daily lives.

Getting oriented

Download an offline map before you go and note the gate nearest your accommodation. Expect to lose signal in narrow lanes. Getting a little lost is part of the experience; shopkeepers and residents will usually point you back to a main route.

Shopping and bargaining

Prices are often negotiated in souks selling crafts and textiles. Smile, ask a fair price, and offer a counter that you are happy to pay. If you are not interested, a polite "la, shukran" is enough.

Guides and etiquette

Use licensed guides arranged through your accommodation or tourist office. Dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and be aware that many mosques are closed to non-Muslims.
