Morocco travel guide

Use this guide to plan thoughtfully, move at a human pace and make room for the unexpected. Morocco rewards slow travel.

Where to go

First-time visitors often combine Marrakech, Fes and the Sahara, with Casablanca and Rabat as an urban introduction and Essaouira or Chefchaouen for a slower pace. Return visitors can explore the Rif, the Anti-Atlas and the southern coast.

How long to stay

One week is enough for two or three destinations. Ten days to two weeks allows a loop that includes the desert without rushing.

Where to stay

Riads and dars (traditional courtyard houses) offer atmosphere in the medinas. Larger cities also have international hotels, and the countryside has kasbah hotels and desert camps.

Money

The dirham cannot be freely exchanged outside Morocco, so withdraw cash from ATMs inside the country. Cards are accepted in many hotels and larger shops, but cash is needed in souks, small cafes and taxis.
