How to think about the route
Morocco is larger than most first-time visitors expect, and distances between highlights are real. A loop that keeps long drives to a minimum leaves you time to enjoy each place.
This itinerary flies into Casablanca, moves north to the capital, then heads inland to Fes, down through the Atlas to the desert, and ends in Marrakech.
Days 1 to 3: Casablanca and Rabat
Start in Casablanca with the Hassan II Mosque and a walk through the Art Deco centre. Then take the train to Rabat, where the Kasbah of the Udayas, the Hassan Tower and Chellah make an easy, calm introduction.
Days 4 to 5: Fes
Give Fes at least two nights. Hire an official guide for the first morning in Fes el-Bali, then spend the second day wandering on your own and visiting the Bou Inania Madrasa and the tanneries.
Days 6 to 8: the Atlas and the desert
Cross the Middle Atlas via Ifrane and Azrou, then continue towards Errachidia and the Ziz valley to reach the dunes of Merzouga. A night in a desert camp is a highlight for many travellers.
Because this section involves long drives, consider a small group tour or a private driver rather than driving yourself.
Days 9 to 10: Marrakech
Return via Ouarzazate and Ait Benhaddou, crossing the High Atlas to Marrakech. Save the last day for the souks, the Majorelle Garden and the evening atmosphere of Jemaa el-Fna.
